President’s Address

Once again we have witnessed an exceptionally busy year. As a branch we have taken on more activities as we play our part towards achieving the £6 million target set for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund.
This year alone the branch will have donated over £3963.48. Over the last few years we more than doubled our turnover which allows us to do two things – give more to the RMCTF and to spend more on our members and we are now in the process of making plans for 2014 – our birthday year.
As a branch our members have supported The Dartmoor Yomp, supermarket collections, the Poppy Appeal and new for this year The 17 Km Commando Challenge on Woodbury Common. This latest event, part of the Alan Hardy Commando Challenge organisation is totally supported by RMA Exeter and at the last count the inaugural event this year raised over £156,000 for the RMCTF from 450 competitors as well as funds for the branch. Next year we are aiming for 1500 competitors all on the one day (Saturday 16th June 2012) and we need you, your wives, partners and friends out to help as marshals – we will be looking for at least 80 of you.
It should not be forgotten that we continue to provide Mentors for the recruit Troops although for some of this year recruiting was slowed and recruit intakes were cancelled. However the process is winding up once again due to unexpectedly large exodus of marines and JNCOs from the Corps lured by the promise of riches from maritime security (engaging with pirates to you and me).
We had an excellent turnout at the RMA Annual Reunion and although we did not retain our hold on the Quiz Trophy we did manage 3rd place in the shooting – so well done that team. As for the RMA v RM golf competition – the less said about that the better. Suffice it to say we did not do very well! The Armistice Day service at Higher Cemetery (completely organised by Jumper & Pauline with assistance from our branch) was very well attended with the support of good weather and an appearance on local TV. This was not the same weather experienced by some of our team supporting 42 Commando RM down in Plymouth on the same day. Socially we also remain very busy with visits to the Mountbatten Festival of Music, Summer Ball, a well-attended Remembrance Sunday at the White Ensign Club, and our Christmas Draw and Dance.
To all the members who organised the events I have mentioned I offer my sincere thanks. Our branch remains robust with steady recruiting and our numbers have reached a very healthy 115 however it would be nice and a compliment to the branch if more of you would get involved in helping with the fundraising events. It is a great way to meet the people of Exeter and to support the Royal Marine family of which you are all members.
I wish you all a prosperous and happy New Year.

Peter Babbington
President

Sir Jimmy Savile OBE KCSG
(Order of the British Empire and Knight Commander of St Gregory the Great)
We were all very saddened to learn that Sir Jimmy Savile had crossed the bar, a great supporter of the Royal Marines. Jumper first met Sir Jimmy at CTCRM when he and his brother undertook the 9 Mile Speed March with one of the recruit squads. At that time he was one of the Team Corporal’s and Malcolm Harris was the Sergeant. If I am correct, his brother was a little faster than Jimmy.
Sir Jimmy often stayed in the Sergeants Mess, and Jumper recall’s being in camp one Saturday morning with his wife Pauline to carry out a couple of extra parades within the Squad he was training at that time. He therefore left his wife in the Mess (the old Sergeants Mess) with the daily papers and a coffee. He returned about an hour later and found his wife in deep conversation with Sir Jimmy, who was staying in the Mess.
He was a regular to CTCRM and often attended parts of the Commando tests with any Recruit Squad under training; he also compared the ‘Miss Meet the Marines’ competition and attended the Meet the Marines open days.

Commando Challenge
Once again the Branch supported the cry for volunteers, this time to support the 21st running of the Commando Challenge as organised by Branch member Alan Hardy. Teams and individuals, each of whom must have raised at least £100 in sponsorship beforehand run from Bicton Arena to complete the cross-country and obstacles part of the Endurance Course for “fun” and in the name of raising money for the C Group and Devon Air Ambulance. This event normally raises in excess of 300K

People came from far and wide and in large numbers to take part (over 1000 on each of the two days the event ran) and Exeter Branch members Peter & Kay Babbington, Jumper & Pauline Collings, Trevor Philpott, Bob & Morven Fletcher, Mike Phillips, Tony Duke, Colin Thomas and Syd Foulston, all played a major part in manning up most of the stands and checkpoints on either or both days, not forgetting our RM Cadets at TS Exeter - good effort lads and lasses one and all.

A rewarding and well-deserved postscript to the Commando Challenge has also come about with the award of this year’s Mountbatten Sword to the event’s Director, Alan Hardy. Well done Alan and Melanie and all in his team.

This sword was one of 3 samurai swords (more correctly, “katamas”) handed to Lord Louis Mountbatten at the formal surrender of the Japanese Forces in South-East Asia at Singapore on 12 September 1945.

‘Didn’t they do well’
We have to join the plaudits and extend congratulations to the ‘Military Wives’ Choir on achieving the support of the public and being the Number 1 Hit for Christmas with ‘Wherever you are’. Well done to Gareth Malone and the ladies. The TV program of the lead up was fascinating and says a lot about our girls side of being married to the Corps.

Always remember you're unique. Just like everyone else.

Remembrance Week-end
The Branch was represented at the annual Royal British Legion’s ‘Festival of Remembrance’ held at the Great Hall on Thursday 10th November. Our Branch Standard was paraded by Ben Chetwyn and escorted by Colin Thomas and Tony Duke.
Our street collectors, who on average spent a couple of hours collecting on Saturday, helped to raise over £7000 for the Poppy Appeal. Thanks to Bob Fletcher for organising, Alex & Jill Manning, John Turner, John Allen, Jumper Collings, Jock McKeeman, Tim Bourne, Dave Armitage, Ray Turley, Mike & Elaine Phillips, Trevor Bartlett, Fraser Parkinson and Ben Chetwyn. Fraser also distributed poppy boxes around Sowton Ind Estate.
The Service of Reconciliation was held at Higher Cemetery, on Armistice Day, Friday 11th November at 1100hrs, fortunately we had a dry and pleasant day, yet the Welcome Home Parade in Plymouth had very heavy rain. The guests were Sir John Cave the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Devon, Cllr Mrs Stella Brock, the Lord Mayor of Exeter; also Brigadier Ged Salzano MBE, Commandant of CTCRM: Mr Ashley Verncombe from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Mr John Bedmarz representing the Polish Community. Following the official wreath laying the ‘80’ children from Ladysmith Junior School laid poppy crosses at each of the 200 war graves. We also laid two poppy wreaths on behalf of two German families on the graves of their loved ones who were killed 1941 over Exeter. Music was played by the Band of the Royal Marines from CTCRM, recently returned from Afghanistan and a RM Bugler sounded ‘Last Post’ indicating the start of the two Minute Silence, and Reveille its end. We were privileged that Corporals Andy Farmer & Jamie Cunningham joined us from 40 Cdo RM to recite the Exhortation and the Kohima
Epitaph. Our thanks to them and to 40 Cdo RM. Thanks must go to all the Branch Members who assisted and attended the Service.
Afterwards at Trinity House we had a pleasant reunion of all the service organisations that attended. `Up-Spirits' was piped, and the yardarm well and truly spliced.
On Remembrance Sunday a number of Branch members attended local Remembrance Sunday Services. Ben Chetwyn paraded the Branch Standard at the City Memorial at Northernhay Gardens and our Chairman; Col. Trevor Philpott laid the Branch poppy wreath. On completion, we were entertained by Eddie Campaigne and his group ‘Soul Commitment’. Once again, it was an excellent performance by them, thoroughly enjoyed by us all and also to by the ‘dad dancers’. (as seen on Facebook). Meanwhile at CTCRM, Dave Armitage and Dennis Williamson laid a poppy wreath on behalf of the Branch at the Memorial Wall and at the Commando Memorial.

In December Jumper & Pauline Collings, Tony & Julie Duke and Ray Turley visited the Ladysmith Junior School to present a framed Certificate in appreciation of their assistance given on Armistice Day. During the visit, they admired the school children’s work relating to WW2 and the Exeter Blitz.

Miscellaniousness

Did you serve with Brian Alan Scott. RM131728, who now lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.- He has written an (unpublished) book of my RM and 42 Commando experiences culminating in the Suez landings which I call “Khaki Blues.” Jumper & Pauline and Peter & Joan paid their respects by visiting Gerry Riglar’s ’ at Sydling St Nicholas and then retired to the Greyhound for lunch. George & Jan Teal have moved house, now closer to CTCRM

Summer 2011
Annual General Meeting
'On Thursday, 14th April, we held the Branch Annual General Meeting, which commenced with a Minutes Silence to remember those of our Branch, the Corps and former colleagues who have ‘crossed the bar’ during the year. Their names being read out by Ron Crabb.

Our Chairman, 'Jumper' Collings then gave a lucid and detailed account of the Branches activities during the past twelve months, which has been a very busy period, many of them raising the profile of the Exeter Branch as well as raising funds for Corps Charities; - which included ‘front of house’ duties for the Choral Concert and the premier of Eternal Voices at Exeter Cathedral, the Garden Party at Ray & Annie Rosedale’s, the March 4 Honour through Exeter, Parade on Armed Forces Day, trip to Swindon Railway Museum (twice), Dartmoor Yomp, as well as street collections at Sainsbury’s and Tesco Supermarkets, the usual Barnfield Car Park and the Car Boot Sale at the Livestock Market. This was followed by the Annual Reunion held at CTCRM in September. Later in the year we organised the annual Armistice Day Service at the Commonwealth War Graves at Higher Cemetery and the usual Christmas events. We cannot forget the excellent musical entertainment by Eddie Campainges’s ‘Soul Commitment on Remembrance Sunday.

All of the Officers and Committee members, who work so diligently hard for the Branch, were returned unopposed and Jumper thanked them for their hard work and sterling efforts during the past year. He also paid tribute to our ladies for their enduring support'

Street Collection – Saturday 16th April.
Thanks to Jumper Collings; Jock McKeemen; Dave Armitage; Bob Fletcher; Alex Manning; John Hall; Ray Turley, Trevor Philpott; Chris Lambert; John Turner; Ron Crabb;and Gunter Sach who gave up a couple hours or more on Saturday and despite a recession, raised a total of £1115-72 for RM Charities, at the first count - to be confirmed by the Treasurer when he returns.

Our thanks to the shoppers and to the citizens of Exeter for their support. Which included Bill Mackie (former PTI) and Arthur English (former D) and others.

Our thanks to Jumper, Colin Thomas (2 shifts), Syd Foulston, Robbie Blowers, John Allen, Jon Freer and Fraser Parkinson.

Commando Challenge 2011.
Reg Pearce writes:- We had good weather for the event and provided a total of 59 volunteers. There were almost 500 runners starting at 0830 with the last group arriving back at the Top Field at around 1530. Each runner was expected to raise a minimum of £100 sponsorship giving us an expected total of about £50K. A group of the runners were sponsored by Citibank to the tune of around £46K and our final total banked at the end of proceedings was just over £100K. With the pledges yet to be received and Gift Aid this should round out at about £140K.
Charlie Hobson and Simon Hill were both there and they were overjoyed with the amount raised, the support from the volunteers and the organisation of the event. We also got complimentary remarks from the Commandant (who started the first few serials) and other senior officers at CTCRM.

All in all, a successful first running of this event.

Well done to all the Exeter Branch members who supported this inaugural event:- Tony Dukes, Colin Thomas, Peter Babbington, Bob Fletcher, Alex Manning, Syd Foulston, Gunther Sach, Ben Chetwyn, Ray Turley, Trevor Bates, Mike Phillips, Nick Beyts, Tim Bourne, Chris Brookbank, Chris Lambert, George Teal, Ray Rosedale, John Lawless, Keith Anderson and Keith Worley Thanks also to our ladies:- Kay Babbington , Sylvie Beyts, Julie Dukes, Jenny Forbes, Mo Armitage and Pauline Pearce. Special thanks must go to Alan Hardy and Reg Pearce who undertook all the preparation and organisation – well done guys - a fantastic effort.

Simon Hill (Association President) writes:- Please pass on my appreciation for all that the members achieved on the day; smiling faces, efficiency, endurance (long day/bit breezy as well!), a real Corps Family effort. Everyone enjoyed it and they are coming back.....so standby for next year; - Saturday 16th June 2012.

Parcel to RM Band in Afghanistan
Dear Jumper & Pauline. From C/Sgt Paul Luford RM Band in Afghanistan.
1st email. Just a quick note from a very happy Royal. A big thank you for the welfare parcels you sent out to Afghan. It always raises morale amongst everybody out here to know you are thought of by not just your families. I have just returned from compassionate leave recently and was confronted with over 15 parcels (some of my own!). What a joy it was to be able to play Father Christmas again......twice in one year. We have been able to send some with our convoys to the guys on the ground, guys who certainly do not have the luxuries of Bastion. One of the Marines is an ex bandy serving with 42, so he should be getting a few parcels to disseminate amongst the lads. The lads and lasses here are well if not slightly warm (in the mid-40s) and will only get hotter in the next few weeks. We are very busy at the moment with ranks out on the ground on the convoys and in Ambulance troop helping the injured. Morale is high and looking forward to coming home and gigging again, nothing better than a good parade. Once again, many thanks for your contribution. It certainly does not go unnoticed, even if a reply doesn't come back. Fortunately we have the luxury of the internet once in a while so just enough time to voice our thanks.
2nd email. Thanks once again for the package. A number of our guys have proffed some of the stuff out of it. It's been a real communal gathering. Everyone especially likes the glacier dark mints, a veritable taste sensation. Some of the guys are out on the ground at present in the Mastiff on the convoys. Going through some dodgy areas where there's been a sniper at work. You'll no doubt hear it on the news, not good at the moment. On a brighter note, our lads and lasses are leaving theatre to be replaced by the other half of the band in early July. Our powers to be think it is good not to have so much skill fade. All the lads just wanted to stay for 6 months and finish the tour with the rest of med group. Anyway, need to write to the long haired colonel or Claire to everyone else. Again, thank you for the boxes, it really does make a difference.
Best wishes and see you on the counter march!
Paul Luford CSgt RM BandCTCRM and the rest of the Ladies and Gents of the RM Band
The Band are currently changing over. According to a TV report, they are still waiting for their musical instruments

Hasler Company
At the June branch meeting we entertained two members of Haslar Company – WO2 Tony Veale (Lumsden Tp Comd) and C/Sgt Baz Barrett gave an interesting and informative brief on the ‘recovery pathway’ and the role of Haslar Company within it. Baz had already undergone forty one operations and had another three to go. His tale of how various parts of his body have been moved around to replace parts that he lost when he was blown up by an IED on Op Herrick 9 in December 2009 was truly amazing and a testimony to modern medical science and also to the resilience of the human spirit – his. It was a truly uplifting tale from both our speakers.' The story they both told was highly appreciated by a crowded meeting and has reinvigorated our fund raising zeal. Our sincere thanks got to them both and to Hasler Company. We wish them all the best. A Hasler Branch plaque was presented to the Branch
White Ensign Club

Adopt a Recruit Troop - Mentoring
The Mentoring scheme, with members from Exeter and Exmouth, continues to be well supported. The proposed cut backs under the SDSR have started to affect the mentoring scheme as a number of mentors find their duties are in the short term, no longer required.
A meeting of the mentors with the Training Team Troop Officer & Troop Sergeants was held at the Commando Training Wing on Wednesday 29th June. Following a group photograph outside the Officer Mess, we had a very informative presentation from Lt Colonel Tony Chattin RM, OC CTW on recruit training, Hunter Company and future changes to the syllabus. He was very appreciative of the work we as mentors do and may it continue. We then retired to the Sergeants Mess for a curry meal and a few beers

Membership
Well done to those who have already paid there subscriptions for this year.
Membership for now stands at 103+
We welcome:- Capt Michael Clapp RN (retired)

It is new and young members that we need so keep searching and help by recruiting a new member

Devon County Show
We were pleased that this year we were able to join the RN & RM Recruiting Team’s caravan at this year’s show. We were warmly welcomed by the serving members on site and our thanks to Al Rylett and his staff at the Exeter Careers Office for their support. Thanks also to Ollie Allen, Show Secretary for her assistance and to Colin Thomas & Tony Duke (Thursday); Jock McKeeman & Keith Worley (Friday) and Ron Crabb & Ben Chetwyn (Saturday) who represented the Royal Marines Association, advertising the RMA and raising its profile to the public. During the show, we received £174 -78 in donations to the Association.

With Regret
It is with regret that I must inform you that Robin Tuck (RM9401) ‘crossed the bar’ on Thursday 19th May. Robin joined the Corps in 1949 with 557 Squad and served as a Marine until 1955.

He was a regular supporter of the Branch, attending most meetings and reunions. A few years ago he organised the Branch trip by coach to 'Beating Retreat' in London. Until recently, along with John Higgs, Robin regularly cleaned and polished the Branch memorabilia held in the White Ensign Club.

A number of members attended Robin’s funeral took place at the new East Devon Crematorium, near Whimple on Friday 27th May at 1215hrs, then retiring to the New Fountain Inn at Whimple for refreshments. A sum of £700 was donated in Robin’s memory to the Devon Air Ambulance

Our thanks to RM Bugler James Trowbridge, from RM Plymouth Band for his attendance at the funeral and to John Hall who paraded the Branch Standard. Also in attendance were:- Harry & Joan Wade, John & Joan Hall, John & Daphine Higgs, Dave & Mo Armitage, Mike & Elaine Phillips, Jumper Collings, Tony Duke, Colin Thomas and Peter Thompson. -- Not forgetting Dennis Carver, former Royal Marine and Policeman, who is a neighbour and hopefully a new member!!

Also we learnt that Roger Tyack RVM, former RSM and member of the Queens Bodyguard has ‘crossed the bar’.at Deal

Charity Golf Day
The Rotary Club of Exeter Enterprise under their President John Perry, aided by the Exeter Branch of the RMA, organised a Golf Day at the Exeter Golf and Country Club on Thursday 16 June in aid of the RMCTF. A total of 35 four man teams participated.
Branch members Trevor Philpott and Alex Manning chased around the area to get sponsors for each of the holes and over 200 prizes.
The Exeter Branch (Jumper Collings, Trevor Bartlett, Colin Thomas, John Turner and Ray Turley) manned an RMA tent all day and operated the “Last Chance Saloon” on the 18th hole to raise additional funds.
The Branch golfers (Peter Babbington, Trevor Philpott, Tim Bourne, Syd Foulston and George Martin) had “mixed” (!) results. Charlie Hobson (RMA Chief Exec) and Simon Hill (RMA President) also competed. Haslar Company entered two teams with one of them winning a prize and both receiving plaudits from all those present. A team from the Sgt’s Mess, CTCRM was also among the winners.
The weather and the excellent quality of the golf course also contributed to the success of the day which raised £3,400 for the RMCTF. We are very grateful to all who helped, particularly Rotary Club of Exeter Enterprise for supporting the RMCTF and organising the day and they have already agreed to support the RMCTF in 2012, with 14 June 2012 already booked with the Golf Club.

Spring 2011
A number of fresh faced youngish members of Exeter RMA stormed the defences at 40 CDO’s base at Taunton one Wednesday in March. We were shown some of the sparkling new armaments now available to Royal. The disclosure that there is now a grenade thrower (H&K 40mm Grenade Machine Gun) which can place a grenade into a 6ft circle over a distance of 1.5km bought only an offer to demonstrate the Mills over arm technique. The awesome power of the Venerable Vickers replacement a (50mm Browning M2) raised an immediate comparison to the Bren – ably demonstrated by the Fire Support Team for B Company, under the command of Sgt Bernie Manning. Thanks fell as, it really was appreciated. An informative and well-illustrated talk by Major Mark Totten MBE RM covering the recent past activities of 40 Commando RM in Sangin and what the future holds in store for these modern Spartans, was enough to demonstrate the tremendous workload the modern forces cope with, in addition to being under the photographic eyes of the world hoofing ! And so to Lunch, before a final stroll through the camp and a visit to the Garden of Remembrance was a poignant reminder of why the camp is there. Rather than being a morbid reminder in the midst of so much aggressive activity I think the garden formed a completion of the cycle and Royal was back with his oppos. Thank you for a good day, it’s good to know that 40 still reigns supreme. Those present, Tony Duke, Ray Turley, Trevor Bates, Ray Rosedale Jumper Collings, Pauline Collings, Keith Worley, Jimmy McKeeman, Julie Duke, Ron Crab, Ben Chetwyn (author of report), (Major Totten had only learnt that day he had been awarded the MBE for recent operations in Afghanistan)

Commando Challenge The ‘Commando Challenge’ has now been reduced to one day, Saturday 14th May. The organisers of the very successful October Royal Marines Commando Challenge Team charity event, now in its 21st year, have joined up with the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund to stage a very special 17k (endurance) Commando Challenge. With an expected capacity for some 2000 runners on the day there is a potential to raise substantial funds for RMCTF. The Challenge is fully supported by CTCRM and the RMA and will start and finish on the top field, CTCRM. The timings are with runners starting at 0830 with the last lot off at approx 1430. The RMA has been asked to provide about 70 members to act as route marshals and registration over the two days. Reg Pearce has volunteered to coordinate local region volunteers. If you can give of your time it will be very much appreciated for all or some over the two days. Please speak to Reg or confirm via enquiries@commandochallenge.co.uk

Eddie Campaigne, who on Remembrance Sunday 2010, following the Parade & Service, the Exeter White Ensign Club hosted a musical event, ably supported by the Exeter Branch and arranged by Branch Member Eddie Campaigne and his band ‘Soul Commitment’ The 5 piece band, gave their time for free and played a wide and lively selection of music which was very entertaining. This was followed a few weeks later by another event at the Barley Mow, which is managed by Branch Member Dave Layfield. As a result Eddie’s band ‘Soul Commitment’ raised a total of £1380-26 which was divided between H4H and the RMCTF. Well done.

The cheques were presented to Mark Ormrod, a triple amputee, who has received support from both charities, on Friday 11th March, when the former Royal Marines who enlisted as Junior Marines many years ago were present

Working Party Saturday 25th March saw a band of Members who had responded to a request from WO2 Jerry Jenner (Brigade Welfare) for Branch support to remove a large amount of builder’s rubble, old kitchen appliances, scrap iron and other domestic items. These were the resulting waste from the renovation and refurbishment of the new home that Mrs Kirianne Curley, widow of Cpl Steve Curley (KIA last year) had recently moved into. Our thanks to Bob Fletcher, who borrowed a tipper truck from a friend and Dickie Armstrong with his box van, both of which were fully filled. Thanks also to Peter Babbington, Jumper Collings, Alex Manning, Jerry Jenner, Keith Worley and our serving member, John Bennett who all rallied round and made short work in filling the vehicles and later, off-loading it all into the relevant recycling compounds at the City tip. Our thanks must go to John, who gave up a couple hours from his studies on his Junior Command Course, no doubt he gained much from his efforts – in my day it was known as ‘Command Tasks!!’

3 Commando Brigade deploys to Afghanistan 3 Commando Brigade Group, which includes 42 Commando RM, 45 Commando RM, Commando Log Regt. are now deploying to Afghanistan for a 6 month tour of duty. We wish them well and a safe return.

The Chairman has been in touch with the Band Sec at CTCRM offering to support the Band as deployed in Afghanistan.

In reply:- Thank you so much for the very kind support you and your team at the Exeter RMA are willing to show our ranks deploying to Afghanistan. We are deploying two groups of twenty personnel (3 females and 17 males in each group) for a period of three months each although some are doing a six month tour. To that end would it be acceptable for you, if I furnish you with two points of contact that will act on behalf of our deployed ranks and distribute all deliveries accordingly?

If any parcels and goodies could be marked in some way to identify weather they are more suited to a male or female, that would make the distribution process a little easier.

From Central Office BBC Scotland is aiming to do a documentary on Achnacarry and they are very keen to interview anyone who went through the training there.

The RMA has been offered a unique opportunity to help Hasler Company and the Wounded in a very practical manner. Although Hasler has a number of vehicles and a few drivers they are finding it very difficult to manage the frequent journey requests to move the wounded from Plymouth to hospitals and home. We have been in contact with HQ FLEET and Hasler for some time now to see if the RMA can help out.

The plan has not yet been authorised by the Trustees or other participants. However we have been officially requested by the Corps to implement this plan as soon as possible. Before we request Trustee approval we would like to know if there are any members out there who would like to offer their services as drivers for Hasler Company. You would be fully insured by the RMA and all costs would be covered. Sometimes the duties may require an overnight stay. There will be two cars and journeys would be planned at least three days in advance and most would be single day trips. Most importantly no one would be forced to take a task on.

Before the Trustees decide we think it important that they know that there are sufficient volunteers to make this work. Mark Ormrod will be in charge of this venture and we would hope to find a member who will help him coordinate this valuable service to our Corps.

So we would be grateful for volunteers to let us know if they are prepared to support this venture. Clearly you will have to be in striking distance of Plymouth in order to make this work. We believe that we will need about 20 to make it possible; this would be one trip per fortnight at the most.

SW Reunion Tony Duke must have breathed a sigh of relief once he arrived home on Sunday 3rd April, not because it was ‘Mothers Day’, but because the SW Region Reunion Weekend which he had been instrumental in arranging, had been such a resounding success, in spite no doubt of the many hiccups which he had to overcome when dealing with a large hotel group staffed by workers from the world at large!

The good quality amenities and service provided by the

Plymouth city centre hotel were the perfect venue for our gathering, and only surpassed by the superb Saturday night banquet which exceeded all expectations in its grand design, the attention to detail, and the superb quality of the service and food, which would have done justice to the forthcoming Royal Wedding – well done Tony!

Each of the ten large circular tables seating nine guests also included a member of Hasler Company, who were all immaculately turned-out in evening wear with a special cummerbund emblazoned with the Hasler Company logo – very impressive.

The guests of honour included the RMA CEO Brigadier Charlie Hobson, and the OC of Hasler Company, Major Steve Melbourne and his wife Paula as well as the Sergeant Major WO2 Jim Morris and his wife Debbie. The after dinner speech by Charlie reminded us all of how privileged we must feel to belong to such a large and closely knit family as the Royal Marines, and the great help our charity collecting efforts go towards assisting our fellow marines injured on operations. Major Melbourne enlightened us as to the marvellous rehabilitation work undertaken at Selly Oak Hospital, Hedley Court, and by Hasler Co mpany, which is fast becoming the envy of the other services, and thanked the RMA for their efforts in raising funds.

All in all, a most jolly enjoyable weekend, with a grand bunch of her Majesty’s Jollies – what more could a man ask for?

Did you hear about the fat, alcoholic transvestite - All he wanted to do was eat, drink and be Mary .

Since the snow came all the wife has done is look through the window. If it gets any worse, I'll have to let her in.

Just had my water bill of £175 drop on my mat. That's a lot. Oxfam can supply a whole African village for just £2 a month: time to change supplier I think.
